Facts you need to know before you start IPL / Laser Hair Removal treatments

Does the FDA rate IPL / Laser systems?

Some Laser Hair Removal companies in Houston may claim they have laser or IPL machines recommended by the FDA. But as we can from the FDA excerpt below the FDA does not rate any IPL / Laser system. Do not be fooled. Also, make sure you look for FDA approved technology for IPL / laser hair removal treatments.

"The FDA does not make comparisons between systems or how well or safely they work compared to another company's system. FDA does not recommend one laser system over another. Lasers cleared for body hair removal are also cleared for facial hair removal"

Is IPL / Laser hair removal permanent?

The Food and Drug Administration approved it as "permanent reduction", but doesn't work on everyone. Generally, this means that you shouldn't expect laser to remove every single hair from an area. In your skin you have both dormant and active hair. Any changes in your hormone levels will stimulate dormant hair to become active. Because of that reason you could also need touch-up treatments 1-2 times a year after the initial set of treatments.

Usually a minimum of six treatments at specified intervals are generally necessary to achieve substantial hair removal with IPL / laser. This will depend on many factors including the color of your skin and the thickness and color of your hair.

How do IPL hair removal treatments work?

The handpieces emit pulses of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed into heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.

How should I prepare for treatment and what should I expect after treatment?
You should shave the area to be treated 1-3 days before treatment. No waxing or other depilatories should be used 4-6 weeks before treatments and throughout the course of treatment. The hair needs to be "rooted" to be targeted by the pulses of light. The area should be shaved closely so that the light pulse energy is focused on the hair follicle and not wasted on hair above the skin's surface.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs. Redness and bumps at the treatment area are not uncommon and may last 2 hours or longer.

Anywhere from 5-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can help the hair exfoliate by washing or wiping with a washcloth.

At any given time, some of your hair is not in a phase of active growth. Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair.

Are IPL / Laser Hair Remova treatments painful?

Everyone's pain threshold is different, but generally IPL / Laser Hair Removal is not much more painful than waxing, but the sensation is different. It resembles a mild rubber band snapping against the skin for a quick second with each pulse.
